Homework

Instead of nightly homework, I will be giving monthly at-home projects. A hard copy of the projects will be given before the first day of the month and will be due on the first school day of the next month, with the exception of a few projects (August, April, and June), which will be shorter or longer. You can look ahead at the projects that I have planned in the files below. However, these are not permanent until the date I hand them out. If your student wants to work ahead because you know you will be really busy on a given month, than that is fine, but please do not have them do the entire year of projects all within a few months, as dates and projects are subject to change. Students need to take their time on these projects. I expect high-quality fourth-grade work, and their grade will reflect negatively if they rush. Please offer limited assistance on these projects, except on the Engineering Expo, which requires more help.

I will also be sending home extra credit math homework packets. These are OPTIONAL, but encouraged if your child needs extra support in math. The packets will be differentiated and based on your child’s level. They will be sent home at the beginning of a unit, and due by the end of the unit (approximately 1 month per unit) if your child wishes to receive an extra-credit math test grade.

Additional Expectations: I want kids to spend most of their night playing sports, participating in extra-curricular activities, and playing with their friends and family! Students should also be reading at least 20 minutes every single night. Educational apps and resources, such as Prodigy, Freckle, and Splash Learn, are also a great way to enhance learning at home.

My goal is to decrease homework time, as I value extra-curricular activities and family time. If you ever have any questions regarding the projects, message email me and I will do my best to explain in a timely manner.

Materials: Some of the projects will require specific materials. It may be a good idea to look at the project descriptions in advance to see what you will need in advance. Some projects give options to try and cause less stress. For example, Google Slide or Poster. For some families, it may be easier to create a poster with craft supplies and for others, it may be more convenient to use technology. Some supplies will be given to students if necessary (Ex. Endangered Species Booklet).
